The verdict

DreamGen earns its 'uncensored story-writing' label with genre scenarios that are genuinely distinct: a tavern where the player hosts visiting heroes and villains, a necromancer's apprentice managing half-finished magical creations, a techno-archaeologist exploring a city-sized Precursor machine under Neo-Tokyo in 2734. These aren't placeholder titles — they're playable Game-mode worlds. The platform supports multi-character scenes where two or more characters interact simultaneously in the same scenario, which most companion apps can't replicate. Two distinct modes are worth distinguishing: AI Games (immersive world roleplay where you steer plot and character behaviour) and AI Story Generator (you supply a premise; the model narrates). The 'steerable AI' label is meaningful — you can redirect character behaviour and plot direction mid-session and the model follows. Own uncensored fine-tuned models mean no external API setup and no OpenAI content-policy layer. The limitations are real: DreamGen is text-only (no image generation, no voice), and the free tier caps both context length and monthly credits. Starter (~$8/mo) is accessible but modest; the full context window and credit budget need Advanced (~$19/mo) or Pro (~$48/mo). The community and pre-built scenario library are smaller than Chub or SpicyChat.

Best for text-focused uncensored story roleplay with no setup. For total model and card control, SillyTavern goes further (requires self-hosting). For the widest portable character card library, Chub AI is the reference.

Pros

  • Multi-character scene support — two or more characters interact in the same scenario simultaneously
  • Two distinct modes: immersive Game worlds and a separate AI Story Generator
  • Own uncensored fine-tuned models — no API key, no OpenAI content policy applied

Cons

  • Text only — no image generation, no voice output
  • Free tier limited on context length and credits; real depth needs Advanced tier (~$19/mo)
  • Smaller community and fewer pre-built scenarios than Chub or SpicyChat

DreamGen FAQ

Is DreamGen free? A limited free tier lets you test the platform. Starter is ~$8/mo; Advanced (~$19/mo) unlocks larger context windows; Pro (~$48/mo) for heavy use. Check live pricing at dreamgen.com.

Does DreamGen need an API key? No — DreamGen runs its own uncensored fine-tuned models. No OpenAI or Anthropic key required.

What is the difference between DreamGen's Game mode and Story Generator? Game mode puts you in an immersive roleplay world where you make decisions and talk to characters. Story Generator takes a premise and narrates a full story. Both are uncensored.

Can DreamGen handle multiple characters in one scene? Yes — multi-character worlds let two or more characters interact simultaneously. Most companion apps are single-character only.

Does DreamGen generate NSFW images? No — DreamGen is text-only. For NSFW image generation, Promptchan AI or SoulGen are better options.
