The verdict

Chub AI (Venus) is the largest open repository for NSFW character cards, and also hosts Venus — its own built-in chat frontend. The distinction from closed companion apps is architectural: Chub cards are portable open-format files (.png with embedded JSON, or plain .json) that store a character's personality, example dialogues, system prompt, and optional Lorebooks — context files that embed world-building rules, NPC relationships, and lore that shape every response. A well-built Chub card with a full Lorebook delivers significantly more consistent, deep roleplay than most closed-app characters. The model ceiling is the real differentiator. Venus's free hosted tier is slower; paid plans (~$5–$15/mo) add credits and speed. But connecting your own API key — Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or local models via Oobabooga or LM Studio — makes Chub a free frontend to any model with no content-policy layer beyond what your chosen model applies. Cards are also fully compatible with SillyTavern and other frontends; the library and the frontend are decoupled. The trade-off is friction. New users land on a search page with no onboarding. Card quality across 100,000+ entries is wildly uneven: the top 1% are polished multi-persona cards with full lorebooks; most of the long tail are thin stubs. iOS app was discontinued; web-only. (Note: chub.ai is geo-restricted from some regions; facts sourced from published platform documentation.)

The reference for character card depth and BYOAPI freedom. For a no-setup alternative, SpicyChat has 300,000+ community characters without card format complexity. For full local model control, SillyTavern paired with Chub cards is the ceiling.

Pros

  • Lorebook-embedded portable cards: world info and NPC relationships ship inside the card file
  • BYOAPI freedom: connect Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or any local model with your chosen content policy
  • Cards compatible with SillyTavern and other frontends — library and chat interface are decoupled

Cons

  • No onboarding — new users face a search page with no obvious first step
  • Card quality wildly uneven across 100,000+ entries; sorting by highest-rated is essential
  • Web-only; iOS app discontinued

Chub AI (Venus) FAQ

Is Chub AI free? The Venus chat frontend is free with slower hosted models. Paid plans (~$5–$15/mo) add credits and speed. Bringing your own API key (Claude, OpenAI, etc.) makes Chub essentially free to use.

What is a Lorebook on Chub? A Lorebook is a context file embedded in a character card that stores world lore, NPC details, and relationship rules. When relevant topics arise, the Lorebook content injects into the model context automatically.

Can I use Chub AI cards in SillyTavern? Yes — character cards download in SillyTavern-compatible format (.png or .json) and import directly into SillyTavern, Oobabooga, or other compatible frontends.

Why is card quality so uneven? Cards are community-created with no minimum quality gate. Sort by highest-rated and check the community reviews on each card to filter the top tier from the long tail.

Is Chub AI NSFW? Yes — NSFW content is explicitly permitted and the library has a dedicated NSFW toggle. Cards cover the full spectrum of adult content and explicit scenarios.
